Modern semi-trailers rely heavily on ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBS (Electronic Braking System) to maintain braking stability, shorten stopping distances, and improve overall road safety. However, trailers operate in harsh environments—dust, vibration, corrosion, and road spray—making ABS–EBS faults extremely common in daily fleet operations.

Below is a breakdown of the most frequent ABS–EBS problems found on semi-trailers and how drivers and technicians can detect and prevent them.

1️⃣ Wheel Speed Sensor Failures

The wheel speed sensor is the most commonly failing ABS/EBS component. Typical issues include:

• Sensor gap too large due to hub wear or improper installation
• Metal shavings on magnetic sensors causing false readings
• Damaged sensor cables from stones or tire blowouts
• Corroded connectors reducing signal quality

When a wheel sensor fails, the ECU disables ABS control on that wheel and activates the warning lamp.

2️⃣ Damaged or Corroded Wiring — The #1 Cause in Old Trailers

Trailer wiring is constantly exposed to water, mud, snow, and vibration. Over time:

• Insulation cracks and causes short circuits
• Terminals corrode and lose signal quality
• CAN lines get pinched between chassis components
• Ground faults cause intermittent ABS activation

EBS modules are extremely sensitive to voltage variations, making clean wiring essential.

3️⃣ EBS ECU Faults (WABCO / Knorr / Haldex)

ECUs can fail due to moisture, electrical overload, or internal component aging. Common symptoms include:

• no communication via diagnostic tool
• constant warning light even after sensor replacement
• intermittent loss of braking control signals
• incorrect axle load readings

Moisture entering the ECU connector housing is the most frequent cause.

4️⃣ Incorrect Coupling Between Truck and Trailer

Many ABS/EBS faults occur simply because the trailer is not receiving proper electrical communication from the tractor unit.

• Damaged 7-pin (ABS) connector
• Loose or bent ISO 7638 plug
• Corroded trailer sockets
• Incorrect wiring on older tractors

If ISO 7638 is not connected correctly, the trailer may lose EBS power and revert to mechanical braking only.

5️⃣ Faulty Modulator Valves

ABS/EBS relies on modulator valves to precisely control brake pressure. Failures include:

• internal sticking from contamination
• frozen valves in winter conditions
• air leaks reducing response time
• solenoid coil burnout

Delayed or uneven brake response is a key symptom.

6️⃣ How to Prevent ABS–EBS Failures

• Inspect wiring harnesses every service interval
• Clean ISO 7638 and 7-pin connectors regularly
• Check sensor gaps at every tire change
• Protect ECUs from water spray and steam cleaning
• Ensure correct air dryer maintenance to avoid valve contamination

ABS and EBS systems significantly improve trailer safety, but only when all electrical and pneumatic components are maintained correctly.
